It’s an old bar-room trick.
You get your CEO friend to think that his company has acquired a media property without his knowledge. You pull this off by floating an unsubstantiated rumor that you heard from Twitter. Bonus points if you have already confirmed the rumor to be a about as valuable as your Uncle Marty’s pet rock.
This was the game that Mike Arrington played at a Flickr party he recently attended. Why this story is worth talking about is that it shows the life cycle of how a rumor can be magically transformed into fact in just as much time as it takes for you to log into Twitter.
