The LA times raises the question whether Wikipedia should open itself to outside advertising.
It seems clear that the problem here has less to do with economic ineptitude and more to do with the trap that the Wikimedia Foundation set up for themselves when they launched. The culture they created is so opposed to the idea of advertising that adding it could completely destroy the encyclopedia.
What’s the solution? Well, I think that’s still an open question. The right answer though is not donations.
